About Calderglen Country Park
Welcome to Rouken Glen
Park
Before the Park
This area of land, then known as Birkinshaw, was originally owned by the crown but it was
gifted to Lord Eglinton as a private estate in 1530. In the early 1800's this was the site of Deacons Bank
Farm (pictured), even though the area of the city named after it is some distance away.
In 1852 the land was bought to build a paper mill but investors could not be found so Walter Crum made
it his home.
Park Opening
Rouken Glen Park was opened in May 1906. Originally
the gardens were open to the public two days a week The tram network
was extended to the gates to improve access and the park became very
popular.
In 1924 the boating pond (pictured) and boathouse was created. The boathouse is
now the cafe.
